Deciding when it is time for a divorce

On Behalf of | Jun 17, 2020 | Divorce

Going through a divorce in California can be expensive, and it can take an emotional toll on everyone involved. Before making the decision to file for divorce, there are some questions that people should ask themselves to make sure that they are making the right decision.

First, it is important to think about what else is going on that may be making someone unhappy in a relationship. Did one spouse just lose a job? Has being cooped up inside during quarantine times gotten to be too much to handle? Even if a rut lasts for a while, it is not always a sign that divorce is the answer. However, if someone genuinely believes that he or she will be happier alone, then it may be time to have a serious discussion with that person’s partner.

People change as they get older, but it is not always for the better. If one partner grows and the other sticks to or develops bad habits, it can cause a rift in the marriage. Another bad sign is if one spouse calls all the shots, without ever compromising. If couples are not working together to grow and support each other, they should discuss why that is and see if it is something they can change.

Oftentimes, people who have been married for years tend to take each other for granted and treat each other less kindly than they would other people. Spouses should make an effort to truly listen to and appreciate one another. Before talking to an attorney, individuals should speak with their spouses to see if anything can be done to salvage a relationship. If communication has failed to resolve internal conflict, it does not hurt to consult with a divorce attorney, even if a person is not sure whether or not to get a divorce. A family law attorney who handles divorce and high-asset divorce can tell someone what to expect and help the client decide whether a divorce is the right way to go.
